In a powerful move to combat malnutrition and promote healthy eating, FXB Rwanda, in collaboration with E4IMPACT and local authorities, held a dynamic Nutrition Campaign across Gakenke and Nyabihu districts. The campaign is part of the broader FOSTERING project under the "KUNGAHARA" program, funded by the European Union, aimed at improving food security through sustainable agriculture and nutrition.
Raising Awareness Through Action
The campaign, conducted on March 20th and 21st, drew over 690 community members, including cooperative members, parents, caregivers, pregnant women, and children under two. The core focus was to promote balanced diets, hygienic food preparation, and the importance of dietary diversity, especially at the household level.
Key activities included:
Live cooking demonstrations showcasing nutritious meals with locally available ingredients.
Nutrition education sessions delivered by health experts, local leaders, and FXB representatives.
Growth monitoring for children under two and pregnant women.
Food as a Catalyst for Change
Participants engaged in hands-on sessions where meals were prepared using ingredients like eggs, milk, Injanga (small fish), vegetables, and orange-fleshed sweet potatoes. Caregivers and health workers emphasized food safety and kitchen hygiene during these sessions.
"We are not only teaching nutrition—we are building healthier families, one meal at a time", said Second Valens Gashema, FXB Rwanda’s Agriculture and Nutrition Officer.
Impact in Numbers
692 participants across both districts.
68 malnourished children reached.
33 children under two and 21 pregnant women assessed for growth indicators.
Strong cooperation with 30 agricultural cooperatives growing pineapples, passion fruit, and sweet potatoes.
Looking Ahead
The campaign has sparked significant community engagement and inspired families to replicate healthy practices at home, including preparing a balanced meal for their children. While the journey to eradicate malnutrition continues, this campaign marks a strong step forward in promoting food security and community health.
