Over a period of three days, 30 cooperative representatives, 20 district and sector agriculture officers, and 16 sector cooperative officers underwent comprehensive training in regenerative agriculture practices and post-harvest management.
The training, focusing on crops like pineapples, passion fruits, and sweet potatoes, aimed to equip participants with sustainable farming methods to boost soil and crop productivity. The training concluded with the provision of agriculture kits to the 30 partner cooperatives. The trained participants will also extend their knowledge by training an additional 3,000 cooperative and community members, amplifying the impact of the project across the target districts.
“We have gained valuable knowledge in soil preparation, crops care, and post-harvest handling,” said Nibishaka Faustin, a cooperative representative.
“This training has strengthened our ability to practice sustainable farming, and the agricultural kits provided will be instrumental in implementing what we’ve learned.”
Following the training, farmers in Gakenke District, alongside district officials and partners, officially launched the pineapple planting season. Farmers applied the newly acquired techniques, such as proper spacing, soil preparation, and mulching, to maximize yields.
The participants completed a three-day training on regenerative agriculture
FXB Rwanda’s Executive Director expressed enthusiasm about the project’s long-term impact : “We are committed to supporting farmers in improving both the quantity and quality of their produce. With the right tools and knowledge, they can become models for other farmers in the region."
District officials also lauded the partnership between the European Union and FOSTERING implementing partners.
“This collaboration has provided essential support to our farmers. The training and tools they received will undoubtedly help them achieve more. As district officials, we will continue to provide guidance to ensure the success of this project,” said Vestine MUKANDAYISENGA, the Mayor of Gakenke district.
As the Kungahara-FOSTERING project progresses, it’s evident that the commitment of the partners, farmers, and local officials will drive sustainable agricultural growth, empowering communities to achieve food security and economic independence.
